Who were the first people in Decatur County?

The first people in Decatur County were Native Americans. The Hopewell, Delaware, Miami, Algonquian, and Pottawatomie Indian nations all lived in this area of Indiana in the past. The first settlers on record were John Fugit and his family and Griffy Giffith and his family. Both families settled in the northern part of Decatur County sometime before 1820.
